Nearly all addicts and alcoholics have tried to stop their dependency in their hometown or city environment. Some will have succeeded temporarily, but without a true program for a new way of life, these attempts are almost certainly doomed to failure sooner or later. The triggers are simply too numerous.

People, places, things and familiarities. ‘Take the next right turn and in 3 minutes I’ll be at the dealer’. ‘There’s that pub I had a great night in last month’. ‘Wow, there’s Dave on his lunch break, I bet his connection isn’t far away’. Such thoughts and a thousand others will plague the addict or alcoholic trying to maintain some length of recovery. And that’s not even mentioning the latest broken relationship, and all the ‘less than wholesome’ phone numbers that keep popping into vision on the mobile.

Thailand offers an atmosphere perfect for recovery, from the climate, the natural surroundings, and its people, thus making it a perfect place for a rehab.

Rehab Treatment Program is a very wide term, overused and underspecified. It does not do justice to The SafeHouse Rehab Centre model, which is an eclectic, proven, scientific, sympathetic and non-judgemental road map to exit dependency. Our alcohol addiction treatment program and our drug addiction treatment program will clearly and effectively show what can be done to stem the awful damage to the life of the addict and alcoholic, and those closest to them.

An essential ingredient of any dependency and addiction treatment intervention is the client’s willingness to actively participate; if not total willingness, then partial willingness. If not partial willingness, then just an iota of open-mindedness to engage with the rehab treatment program, can be enough to get the ball rolling. A major and challenging psychological hurdle is the concept of abstinence (not using any alcohol or other drugs even for recreational purposes) during the treatment program. As perplexing as this idea is, it is a vital element in the process of understanding how we operate, and discovering the relationship we have with self, others and our substances. In reality, the fear of the detox (if required) is far worse than the detox itself, and the absolute requirement to remain drug-free through the entire rehab treatment program is not really such a big deal, because we take very good care of our clients.

SafeHouse can arrange and facilitate a detox here in Thailand. It will either be an inpatient in a private hospital or outpatient through a local hospital, clinic or doctor. We also have nursing staff on call for administering the detox drugs at the rehab centre if appropriate. As long as you give full disclosure of your addiction status in advance, we can work it out. The detoxes will be as comfortable as possible. Actually, in the right rehabilitation environment, most detoxes are relatively painless and quite a speedy process. The more complex ones such as longstanding methadone, barbiturate or alcohol dependence will take longer and be less comfortable, but manageable.

Any detoxes required by SafeHouse clients will be prescribed and administered in association with Aikchol Hospital, in Chonburi City, just 20 minutes’ drive from SafeHouse.

This will be different for each individual client. Your detox will be discussed with you, so you know exactly what is going on. We will aim to make your detox as safe, short and comfortable for each individual as possible.

How long is rehab? – this is one question close to the top of everybody’s list. Perhaps you will know the phrase, ‘how long is a piece of string’. In truth, the time needed for rehab will vary from person to person but we will work with you to ensure that your stay at Safehouse and your aftercare package will be right for your rehab needs

In my years working in recovery, I have seen many people attend rehab and leave early, only to have to try again later. Worse still some end up in jail, and some will continue to use substances until they die in active addiction. If you’re considering rehab it’s quite possible that you have already tried many ways to control your drug use and failed. Now you stand here at the edge wondering how much of yourself and your time you will give, or perhaps need to give to save your own life.

If you are willing to engage with our program, we will give you the skills to tether your metaphorical piece of string to firm foundations so that you have something to hold on to and can chose to make the right choices if the temptation to return to your old life resurfaces in the future. In short, if you commit to our program, we will 100% commit to you to ensure you get the right rehab stay for you and your needs.

We are a small rehab offering a more personal tailored programme. We cater for a maximum of 10 clients at any given time.

The minimum treatment programme is for 30 days and we do not advise leaving before, however, we cannot and will not hold someone against their will. In the event of a client being determined to leave, we will firstly always try and persuade the client to stay and continue with treatment, however, if they are absolutely determined to leave, we will have no choice but to comply with their wishes. In the event of a client leaving our facility early, your attention is drawn to our refund policy.

Contact with the outside world whilst in our care must be considered carefully and in the best interests of all concerned. There are few things more distracting to the client than family or work issues and problems, and few things more damaging to the client than contact with dealers or drinking and substance using acquaintances. Our policy, conceived in the client’s best interests, is therefore as follows:

On check-in, the client will make contact with the outside world via one family member or alternative significant other to confirm safe arrival. The client will then give us the name and phone number of one designated significant other, with whom SafeHouse can remain in contact throughout the treatment program.

If a client arrives, having been clean and sober for some days or weeks, and it is considered appropriate by the clinical and management team, the client can immediately retain their devices in the evenings and on weekends.

Smoking is permitted outside. It is forbidden to smoke inside our buildings. In addition, we do not advise bringing vapours/vape devices to Thailand as they are illegal.

Condos – Every condo has a balcony where clients can smoke. There is absolutely no smoking permitted inside the condos.

Day Center – Smoking is permitted outside, there is a smoking area in the back garden.

In General – Most places in Thailand permit smoking outside – but this may vary in certain areas like Bangkok; some places may have designated smoking areas and you will be asked to stay within the rules and regulations.

(Please note, Smoking is not allowed in Bangkok Airport)

You are welcome to bring your own, especially if there are certain things you prefer. Shampoo and body wash will be provided at the condos and if there is anything else which you need, it can be bought here.

Many clients do not take out travel insurance as most travel policies cover the individual for up to 30 days. However If you wish to purchase travel insurance before arrival, please ensure your policy will allow you to stay here for the length of the treatment you have planned for.

Yes, clients are asked to be back in the condos by 22.00pm on weekdays until the following morning. This may vary at weekends where clients may stay at the day centre with a member of support staff if decided and agreed upon with the team beforehand. Good sleep hygiene is encouraged to facilitate recovery.

Yes, there is Wi-Fi at the day centre. There is no Wi-Fi at the condos, however after day 3, this may be arranged by purchasing a Thai sim card and using it as a hotspot. This will have to be agreed upon by the team prior to purchase.

For the first three days, all electronic devices shall be held in safekeeping by SafeHouse; you will of course be able to let your family/ friends know of your safe arrival, this will be arranged. Removal of devices is not a punishment; it is to allow you to settle in without distractions. After day 3 your devices shall be returned.

You cannot use your devices during the programme in the day from 09.00am to 17.00pm. If there are other circumstances, these will have to be arranged with your counsellor.

Each client will have $300 spending money a month included in their package.

SafeHouse will keep hold of this and keep a ‘tab’ for each individual client. The client will be informed on their spending on a weekly basis or upon asking. The staff will always keep hold of this (clients will not have physical money at any point during their stay) This will be used for the Coffee shop tabs, our local 7/11 (purchase of cigarettes or other items), Sunday Tesco shop and any other items wished to be purchased upon excursions.

We will help you budget but if at any point you wish to top this spending money up, that can be arranged with the team.

No, the drinking of tap water is not recommended in Thailand. Bottled water is provided at the day centre and for the condos.

Yes. Tea and coffee are allowed however the purchase of energy drinks is not allowed. Coffee is provided in the rooms and the day centre; you are also welcome to purchase your own coffee and we have coffee shops on the premises where clients can go to in their free time.

Every Sunday a Tesco shopping trip is arranged to enable clients to purchase items for the week and store them in their condo. If there is anything else required during the week, this can be facilitated upon agreement with counsellors. There is a 7/11 on-site where purchases can be made throughout the week.

The majority of tourists visiting Thailand no longer feel the need to have vaccinations prior to visiting Thailand. If you wish to take these measures, please consult your local doctor who can advise you of the appropriate course of action.

On the TM6/Immigration form, you can specify that the purpose of your visit is tourism/holiday.

We will organise the initial visas on your behalf where and when necessary. Certain extensions will cost more.

A 30-day extension is 1,900 Baht and a 60-day extension is 4,000 Baht
