The purpose of Safehouse podcast is to help families learn the truth about addiction and alcoholism so that they can take the right action to help the addict they love and to help themselves at this critical time in their lives. Exposing the truth about addiction and alcoholism also requires that we bust the myths surrounding both addiction/alcoholism and the recovery process.
I’ve had many listeners ask that I talk more about addiction as a family disease, so let’s call this episode How Sick Are You Really? Kind of a provocative title but I chose it to make some very important points.
One: you wouldn’t believe how much denial there is in a family where one family member is an active addict and/or alcoholic. There’s the business of shame that pushes down the thoughts of : “Oh please let it not be so, I can’t disclose this to any of my of my friends or relatives and God if Aunt Jenny finds out she’ll blab the whole thing to everyone and then what…” At the outset, what it will look like to others is a huge part of our worry, and denial is, at first, just a way of avoiding the truth, and the inevitable, because you see, there is the ego in play too.
